The most common symptom of Strep throat is a severe sore throat. It also causes redness and swelling of the tonsils.
Now, what is a Tonsil stone?
On the other hand, Tonsil stones is a calcium based stone that is formed due to the accumulation of food particles on the tonsils.
In general, this is how a Tonsil stone is formed in your throat..
You eat a variety of foods daily. Out of them some of the food particles slowly settle on the tonsils. If you fail to clean those food particles, slowly bacteria start acting on that food particle. Moreover, the digestive enzymes in the saliva break down the food particle.
Thus within few days, this combination of bacteria with the food particles results in the formation of a tiny white stone known as the tonsil stone. See How to get rid of my tonsil stones Quickly tonight?

Tonsil stone vs Strep throat:
Though they have many common symptoms, It is possible to differentiate tonsil stones and strep throat.
Both of show up many common symptoms like –
- Difficulty swallowing
- Causing sore throat
- White spots on tonsils
- Headache etc
But Follow these tests to identify whether you have a tonsil stone or a strep throat –
Testing the white spots:
Take a cotton bud and mirror. Move under a light and open your mouth. Slowly with the cotton bud touch the white spots present on your tonsils.
Now if you find the white spots as solid then they are most probably tonsil stones.
But if the white spots are somewhat sticky then it could be a strep throat.
This is because strep throat often results in the formation of pus on tonsils. Although tonsil stones also result in pus it happens rarely. So the existence of pus like white spots can almost confirm that it is a strep throat and not a tonsil stone. See “I am getting these stones again and again” What should I do?
Check for Redness:
Yes, open your mouth wide and check for the redness of the throat. This is one of the common symptoms of strep and not tonsil stones. So if you can see the redness of tonsils or red spots on the roof of the mouth then it is definitely strep throat. See “How to identify pus on tonsils”
Rapid strep test:
This is the most accurate test that is generally done by your ENT. The doctor takes a cotton bud swipes down your tonsils for a while. Then he sends the bud to testing for the identification of strep bacteria. It takes about 10 minutes. So if the bid contains strep bacteria then you are having a strep throat.
Some other strep symptoms include high fever, nausea, abdominal pain which are caused by strep bacteria but not tonsil stones.
The Link between Tonsil stones strep throat..
Though many other websites, doctors don’t reveal you this part, It is a matter of fact there is a huge link between tonsil stones and strep throat.
Do you know A Tonsil stone can definitely cause a strep throat?
Yes, it is true..
This is how it causes…
In my book “Tonsil stones eliminator” I explained how a tonsil stone generally accumulates bacteria and viruses on the tonsils daily thus resulting in a number of tonsil problems. So this accumulation of bacteria on is the core reason behind your strep throat.
So to say it clearly, the tonsil stones make it easy for strep bacteria to easily settle down in the mouth. Thus the tonsil stones provide a perfect suitable condition for strep bacteria.
This strep bacteria slowly moves upwards towards the throat and finally results in the strep throat. This is how a tonsil stone indirectly results in a strep throat.
In addition, it can also cause a number of problems like a sore throat, tonsillitis etc as the tonsil stone accumulate all types of bacteria and viruses that enter the mouth. See Where can I get a step by step clear guidance that helps eliminate my tonsil stones?

Eat this for at least 2 or 3 times a day. This can give a huge relief to the swollen tonsils and can help get rid of strep throat without much pain. See “Are tonsil stones contagious?”
Gargle many many many times:
Gargling is the best thing you can do when you have strep throat. You can either use a normal mouthwash or a salt for gargling. This continuous gargling clears the throat completely thus clearing the mucus formed. In addition, this also gives a relief in the case of swollen tonsils.
In general Strep throat goes away in 7-8 days with or without the use of antibiotics.
But I also have Tonsil stones..
But if you have existing tonsil stones, then most probably your strep is caused by the existing tonsil stones present. I already explained how a tonsil stone accumulation of bacteria can cause a strep throat.
So in your case, treating just the strep throat is not enough..
Even though your strep throat may go away in 7-8 days, but it comes again and again due to the accumulation of bacteria because of the presence of tonsil stones.
Listen to this true story..
I have disgusting little tonsil stone things. Due to them I had throat infections at least once a month, and recurring strep which is painful. When They did a test of the bacterias in the tonsil tissue we found all sorts of things, including necrotic tissue and bacteria that is usually found in decaying teeth.
This is how a tonsil stone accumulates all sorts of bacteria causing a number of throat problems. The only solution to this is, eliminating the tonsil stones as soon as possible.
Thus removing of your tonsil stones will not only prevent the strep but also various throat problems that are caused by the accumulated bacteria of tonsil stones.
